The Research Of Yi Chuan Education At Republic Of China Period

During the Republic years, people in Yichuan, a county in North Shaanxi, attach great importance to the value of education and have made great achievements in this respective field. This thesis specializes in the study of the development of the cause of education in Yichuan.This thesis is structured as follows: Chapter 1 introduces the historical background and geographical environment of the development of education in Yichuan. It’s believed that during the Republic years, the education in Yichuan has experienced five different stages, coinciding with the stages of the historical development during that period of time,which includes “abolishing the Imperial Examination System and establishing modern schools” during the last years of Qing Dynasty, turbulent years after the establishment of the Republic Government, reviving years since Nanking Republic Government, booming years during the anti-Japanese war, and lastly a new era of education since the founding of People’s Republic of China.Chapter 2 reviews the administrative management and educational management in Yichuan during the Republic years. County-level and town-level education administration is delegated to the county-owned public school and Education Committee,while school management is delegated to school headmasters.Chapter 3 describes the overall development of education in Yichuan during the Republic years. Elementary education is developed in the form of country schools,private schools, academies and classes. Secondary education mainly include “the ThirdDistrict Union School” founded in 1940 and headed by Mr. Yu Zhengdong, funds being raised in five counties including Luochuan, Yichuan, Zhongbu, Yijun and Tongchuan. A branch campus of the Union School was founded in Yichuan the next year and was renamed “Yichuan Primary Middle School” in the September, with 360 students enrolled.College education in Yichuan includes College of National Revolution, sponsored by Mr.Yan Xishan, State-Owned University of Shanxi(Yichuan Campus) and Yan’an University(Yichuan campus). Vocational education and adult education also gained certain degree of development during this time.Chapter 4 analyzes the historical significance and limitation of education development in Yichuan during the Republic years. Through the development of education, the cultural heritage of Yichuan is inherited and large numbers of talents are cultivated, which in its way supports the great cause of anti-Japanese War. After the founding of New China, valuable historical experience and rich inspiration are drawn from this period to promote the education in Yichuan in the new era.
