The ideological and political education as an important part of quality education, playing a significant role in train the talents who conform to social development needs. As the world’s two big powers country, China and the United States has attached great importance to the role of human resources in the fierce international competition. So, while different social and cultural background in China and the United States, but they all attaches great importance to the ideological and political education of their young students, aims to cultivate qualified builders and successors for the nation-building.This paper uses the comparative analysis, literature search and case analysis, comparative the content, implementation way and safeguard mechanism of ideological and political education of Chinese and American university, more systematic and complete. Through the comparative analysis, summed up the differences and similarities in the ideological and political education teaching contents and means of Chinese and America university, and analyzes the reason of the differences and similarities.The ideological and political education of China and the United States on the content and the implementation approach has its own strengths, but also has its own problems. Relative to the content of ideological and political education advocate capitalist values, promote individualism in America universities, China always adhere to historical materialism viewpoint, advocating collectivism values, which should be given affirm. But at the same time, should also see the deficiency in the implementation way, based on the basic national conditions, refer to some useful experience in America universities with a critical attitude, combined theory inculcation and infiltration education, learning theory and concrete practice, constantly explore the ideological and political education system with Chinese characteristics, accelerating ideological and political education to play a positive role in promoting social progress.
