With the rapid development of the society, in particular, with the economic and cultural globalization of the world, English, as an international language, is playing an increasingly important role in the social development and cultural communication. In China, English has become an important subject in the primary school education. English reading is a very important part in English learning. However, the traditional teacher-centered teaching mode of English reading is gradually depriving the students of their interest in English learning as well as English reading.According to constructivism, in the process of teaching and learning, students should be the active constructors of knowledge rather than passive receivers of knowledge. As for teachers, what they should do is to stimulate students’ interest and enthusiasm in learning, to guide students to participate in cooperative learning and to develop their autonomous learning ability. The constructivism viewpoints in learning are in line with the core idea of the guided learning plan. For these reasons, this research attempts to probe into the effectiveness of guided learning plan in the reading teaching in primary schools under the theoretical framework of constructivism. In this research, 80 students from Grade 6 in a primary school in Kunming are taken as the subjects, and tests, questionnaires and interviews are adopted as the research instruments to explore specifically:(1) Can students’ reading ability be improved with the help of the guided learning plan?(2) Can students obtain certain reading strategies under the influences of the guided learning plan?(3) Can the guided learning plan help boost students’ enthusiasm and interest in learning English?By analyzing, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the data collected from the experimental class and the control class, the results show:(1) The reading ability of the students in the experimental class, who received the guided learning plan teaching, is significantly improved.(2) The guided learning plan teaching can, to a certain degree, help students obtain and use English reading strategies.(3) In the process of the guided learning plan teaching, students are encouraged to learn cooperatively and autonomously. In this way, their interest and enthusiasm in English learning have been stimulated and boosted.
