In more than30years of reform and opening up, a myth of rapid economic development hasbeen creating in the Pearl River Delta region. During this process, the contribution of Smalland Micro Industrial Enterprises (SMIEs) should not be overlooked. As the market economyreform deepens, a trend, including the acceleration of quantity expansion and the gradualupgrading of quality, was seen in the SMIEs. But in the same time, many hidingcontradictions have gradually emerged. Employment difficulty of SMIEs is one theoutstanding issues.Based on this background, the author investigated the SMIEs in the PRD region by the wayof questionnaire and according to a large amount of related data. Combination withadministrative records and statistics data from the government, the author analyze currentemployment status of SMIEs in the PRD region. A field research focus on employmentstatus of Company M was presented as a typical case. The SWOT analysis was applied in thestudy which shows a variety of factors leading to the employment difficulty in SMIEs.Employment strategies of SMIEs are discussed. Finally, the author presents a serial ofsolutions and suggestions from different aspects, such as the consideration of SMIEs, thegovernment functions and the national systems. Some suggestions based on the discussion ofcurrent survey methodology for SMIEs were presented. The author hopes these suggestionscan be useful in improvement of industrial surveys methodology.
