Development of economic globalization makes international tourism to flourishand become the new source and direction of the development of tourism. As Beijingis the capital city of China, the international tourism competitiveness of Beijing issignificant for the future development of its tourism industry. From the literaturesabout international tourism competitiveness, we can see that there are many scholarsusing different evaluation models for the analysis of a single region, as well as usinga particular model or analytical method to investigate international tourismcompetitiveness about different areas. The two mainstream competitivenessevaluation systems are the regional competitiveness model for Swiss Institute ofInternational Management Development (IMD) and the "diamond model" developedby Professor Michael Porter. But for Beijing, on the one hand there is no more comprehensive evaluationsystem of its international tourism competitiveness from the perspectives ofinternational competitiveness and tourism industry, as well as lack of quantitativeempirical analysis; on the other hand, most scholars apply IMD competitivenessevaluation system to a particular region or country adopting analytical hierarchyprocess or questionnaires, which results in the lack of quantitative research andcorresponding application.Aiming at investigating the competitiveness of international tourismobjectively, and enriching quantitative research about IMD competitivenessevaluation model, we apply the IMD international competitiveness model andPorter’s competitive model for the study about the international tourismcompetitiveness of Beijing.Based on the data from Beijing Statistical Yearbook during1991-2013, typicalvariables needed for each model are selected according to the structure and ideologyof the two models, then we perform descriptive statistical analysis of canonicalvariables adopting SAS9.2software package and image analysis of all variablesusing Origin8.6package, which result in the basis of following data processing. After that, we do empirical analysis for Beijing’s international tourismcompetitiveness using the CLUSTER and REG procedures from the aspects of theinternational competitiveness and the competitiveness of the tourism industry. We analyze the overall competitiveness of Beijing in different years usingcluster analysis from the perspectives of international competitiveness and thecompetitiveness of the tourism industry, and give some reasons of the results; as for multiple regression analysis we have accomplished construction, validation, andmodification of the model, based on which we draw impact factors for two modelson the international competitiveness and the competitiveness of the tourism industryin Beijing. Finally, we make some recommendations for improving and enhancing theinternational tourism competition of Beijing from the perspectives of internationalcompetitiveness and the competitiveness of the tourism industry based on theanalysis of the results of empirical analysis and parameters estimated by regressionequation.
