Weihai, the city of Shandong Province, developed the first city image ads inChina in1999. The city image ads was starting to sprout from then on and lasted for a15years of existence, As important tools for imaging campaigns, building andimproving the city, the city image ads have undoubtedly catered to increasingly fiercecompetition between cities. We can expand cities’ visibility and catch audience attention ina short time by taking advantage of city image ads. The first "China· International Filmand video festival" launched in2004. After then, these varies, trendsetting city imageads lances the TV and video websites in an astonishing speedy.In order to get a better understanding of this form of advertising and providetheoretical support for advertising industry and the theorists, the paper combos thecity’s image advertisements which appeases from1999to2013by applyingmultidisciplinary knowledge which included communication, advertising, marketingand semiotics. the paper uses content analysis, document analysis, and case analysismethod to analyze the15-year process of evolution of the cities image ads in Chinaand bring a new life to city image ads in theory.Firstly, the paper defines city image ads, clears the concept and points out theconcept, starting point, audiences and functions about city image ads. These will do agreat favor to the discussion later. Secondly, by analyzing the samples of city imageads, the paper gets the data information of city image ads. Thirdly, the paper summedup the development of city image ads path by analyzing the data. Finally, in order toprovide theoretical support for the development of future city image ads from anoverall and macroscopic view, the paper analyses the present situation and existingproblems about city image ads and put an attention on the problems that may occurwhen we do specific operations and summarize these.
