Land is a basic carrier of urban development. Along with continued urbanizationprocess, expanding and increasing of urban land scale have become the outstandingfeatures on a global scale. Human activities impact the urban area remarkably as thepopulation, economy and transportation are all highly concentrated in this place. Withrapid development of economy, growing population and continued urbanization, landis becoming more and more insufficient to people. Evolution of urban land using andstructure is a complicated phenomenon, which is not just displayed in spatial, but alsoon time series. In some extent, expansion of urban land reflects characteristics ofurbanization. Hence, studying the change features and driving factors of urban landexpansion can provide great help to research issues produced during urbanization. Italso plays an important role on searching effective measures to mitigate land demandpressure, rational planning and managing land use and healthy development of city.On the basis of present situation of researches on urban construction landexpansion,this dissertation studied Xining city of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Withapplication of geospatial analysis, this dissertation analyzed the spatial and timechanging and driving forces of construction land in main urban area of Xining cityemploying three phases of land use conditions (1996,2001and2012) and statisticaldata with the help of ArcGIS and SPSS. The research findings are as follows:1. Urban construction land use changing tended towards stability during1996-2012. That evolution turned from internal transformation to external expansionbased. Though the efficiency of urban land utilization was improving, it still was in alow-level stage of development;2. By analyzing construction land structure evolution it was found that businessservice function, residential function and ecological function were getting enhanced;3. Based on previous analysis of construction land changing, a qualitativeanalysis of construction land expansion driving forces of Xining was made and factorssuch as natural geographical factors, social economy, population growth, policies andurbanization process exerted remarkable influences;4. A method of principal components analysis and panel data model wereadopted to analyze many factors which influenced construction land expansion of Xining. On this basis, linear regression analysis was used to further reveal theinfluences of different factors, and their relationships were proposed. It showed thatliving standard, traffic conditions and population were main driving forcesinfluencing construction land expansion. Thus construction land expansion forecastcould be made in the future.
