More enterprises in China take on the path of internationalization. In order to better understand internationalization, it is important to study this process from different dimensions, such as depth, breadth, rapid and so on. The top management team (TMT) is the strategic decision-maker, who makes decisions on international strategies. This article divides TMT into 4 types based on its diversity and stability, which are the two typical characteristics of TMT that have been researched in previous studies. In this article, TMT diversity and TMT stability are regarded as two dimensions and combined together as two differentiating criteria. It then takes a sample of 118 enterprises in the Chinese manufacturing industry to analyze the differences on international depth, breadth and pace between different enterprises led by different types of TMT. This article uses analysis of covariance:general liner model process (GLM) to test the effect between dependent variables and independent variables, and then compares the international process characteristics of these different types of TMT to find out if there exists a better type of TMT. This article concludes that there are meaningful differences between the 4 types of TMT, and these differences in turn affect the depth, breadth and pace of internationalization. It further concludes that enterprises led by balanced TMT (teams with high levels of diversity and stability) tend to have a positive impact on the depth, breadth and pace of these enterprise’ pursuit of internationalization.
