With the rapid growth of global economy, the issues on resources scarcity and environmental crises are becoming the key bottlenecks for sustainable development of economy and society in China. Under such periodical background, it is commonly recognized that green innovation that combining economic benefits with environmental benefits simultaneously provides an important possibility for sustainable development through saving energy and reducing pollution, thus, the role of green innovation has increasingly aroused much more focus. China has proposed the goal of building the beautiful China in the Third Plenary Session of the Eighteenth and listed Energy-saving & Environmental Protection Industry on the strategic emerging industries to promote the construction of ecological civilization. However, the research about green innovation in China is only at the beginning stage, which is limited to encourage more companies to be innovators and guide government to issue related industry development policy. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the different drivers and dynamic mechanism for Energy-saving & Environmental Protection firms in pursuing green innovation.Firstly, based on relative innovation theory, this thesis explored the influencing factors of green innovation of Energy-saving & Environmental Protection firms. The samples are consisted of 23 firms honored as China’s Green Innovation Companies by the Clean Development and International Finance Forum. In the procedure of recognizing influencing factors, qualitative research was conducted to encode sample information with the aid of software Nvivo10 and grounded theory so as to extract initial concepts and categories, sum up main-categories and mine the core-category. Secondly, multi-case study was introduced to further investigate the dynamic mechanism including the relative acting path, the interrelation between the factors and their co-evolution in different stages of green innovation. The data collection was based on extensive field research and secondary source in three Energy-saving & Environmental Protection enterprises. The final conclusions and contributions are summarized as follows:(1) Five influencing factors on green innovation were recognized, which includes entrepreneur’s innovation willingness, technology capability, market factors, resource commitment and government policies and behaviors. (2)The model related to dynamic mechanism on green innovation was consisted of driving effect, moderating effect and their mutual interaction, among which entrepreneur’s innovation willingness was the subjective driving factor, and it implemented the function through entrepreneur’s environmental cognition and entrepreneur’s background characteristics; Technology capability was the objective driving factor, and it could play its influencing role through technology team, R&D capability, technology reserve and university- industry cooperation; Market factors was the external driving factors which played the role depended on market demand and competitive pressure; Resource commitment was the internal moderating factor realizing its effect through capital resource, human resource and relation resource; and government policies and behaviors were the external moderating factor whose influence mainly reflected on the environmental regulations, policy preference and government behavior. (3) The degree of the above mentioned key factors’effects was different when green innovation developed at different stage. This thesis is only a relatively preliminary exploration for the dynamic mechanism of green innovation of Energy-saving & Environmental Protection firms, the future research should be on the basis of the size and typicality of the samples, and conduct a large number of long-term field studies to empirically tested the results.
