The process of regional economic development shows that the mutual influence of the rate of urbanization and urban-rural residents’ income gap is obvious. That is, if the income gap between rural and urban expansion, it will continually promote the regional population gathering in urban areas, thereby speeding up the process of urbanization. If the regional urbanization rate increasing constantly, the income gap between urban and rural residents will be narrowed down. \This paper analyzes the relationship between the urban-rural income gap and the urbanization rate, through the collection, analysis and calculation of the relevant literature, discussing the internal mechanism between the rate of regional urbanization and the income of urban and rural residents, choosing the Hunan Province as an example, using quantitative analysis method to analyse the influence among regional proportion of urban population, per capita GDP, labor productivity and rural ratio, industrialization rate and the proportion of tertiary industry employed population’s income gap between urban and rural residents, the income gap between urban and rural areas, summarizing he historical evolution of urbanization and development characteristics. The main conclusions are as follows:1.Urbanization and urban-rural income gap in Hunan Province is mainly characterized by three regional characteristics: the east and north of Hunan is a place with developed economic, high rate of urbanization, narrow gap of urban-rural income. This city group is centered by Changsha, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, composed by Yueyang, Changde, Yiyang and so on; the middle of second to the east and north region, including Hengyang、Shaoyang、and Yongzhou; While the west and north region is the last one in Hunan Province. Therefore, we should focus on improving the quality of urbanization in the east, north and middle area, and increasing the quantity of urbanization in the west and north area.2.The empirical results show that: there is a significant "negative correlation" between the regional urbanization rate and the urban-rural income gap. That is, the higher the regional urbanization rate, the smaller the urban-rural income gap; the lower the regional urbanization rate, the greater the urban-rural income gap. Thus, the key to narrow the urban-rural income gap is improving the regional urbanization rate.3.Using Hunan Province as an example, the proportion of urban population, industrialization rate and urban-rural income gap is "negative correlation", industrialization rate and rising urban proportion of the population can effectively narrow the income gap between urban and rural residents, while the tertiary industry the proportion of the working population, per capita GDP and labor productivity and rural income gap ratio was positively correlated, the proportion of tertiary industry employment, per capita GDP and labor productivity ratio of urban and rural development will widen the income gap between urban and rural residents.
