Regionalization is a traditional and important research area of geography. Comprehensive regionalization is based on the principles of regional differentiation and aimed at sustainable development combined with natural and humanitarian factors to study the regionalization, which is favorable for people to enhance integrated management and full-scale development of different regions. Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone is located at the junction of South, Southwest and it is also one of the starting points of “Marine Silk Road”. In recent years, with the rapid development of economy, the ecological environment pressure is also increasing; therefore, it is necessary to coordinate regional development and environmental protection through comprehensive regionalization. In this study, Beibu Gulf Economic Zone was selected, theory of comprehensive regionalization was analyzed, and then natural and social economy environment were studied to establish the principle, basis and methods of comprehensive regionalization. The meteorological monitoring data, social and economic statistical data were selected, 27 indexes involved in environment, resources, economy and society were established. 37 counties(city, area) of Beibu Gulf Economic Zone were taken as the basic unit and data was rasterized. Then assignment was accomplished using spatial analysis and cluster analysis, index weight was done by analytic hierarchy process; comprehensive regionalization of Beibu Gulf Economic Zone was realized using map overlay; optimal development measures was proposed based on the analysis of development situation in every region. The results showed that Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone was divided in to four first-grade regions and eight second-grade regions with county as a basic unit. Four first-grade regions were hilly bench terrace region central, hilly area in west, mountainous hilly plain region in east and karst hilly area in north respectively. Results of regionalization were in agreement with natural environment, distribution of landforms, comprehensive development, environment and resources. Ecological environment, natural resources, economic development and social construction varies in the four first-grade regions by analyzing its average value. In hilly basin area, levels of economic development, industrial structure and social construction were better than the other three areas; due to the rapid development of city construction, density of population was high, per-capita of the resources was in shortage and forest coverage rate was low. II—IV regions were in continuous development status, the percentage of primary industry was higher in the current industry structure.Based on the firs-grade regionalization, eight second-grade regions were divided. They were I-1: financial, trade, logistics and tourism exhibition complex in central basin area, I-2: ecological agriculture, light industry and aquaculture complex in southern hilly area, I-3: industrial and port trade tourism zone in Guinan coastal hills area, II-1: ecological agriculture, resource processing and border trade tourism in the left river valley of hilly areas in Guixinan area, III-1: machinery manufacturing, medicine, clothing and trade logistics complex in Guidongnan hilly and plain area, III-2: agricultural, husbandry, industrial and health resort tourist complex in eastern hilly area, IV-1: ecological agriculture, mining and tourist complex in northern hilly karst region area, IV-2: characteristic agriculture, building materials and food processing complex in northwestern karst hilly area. The comprehensive geographical situation of the eight second-grade regions were analyzed including resource development status, agricultural and industrial development and distribution; based on the analysis, development way in the future were proposed which has certain theoretical and practical significance and provided references for sustainable development of the different areas.
