Coastal zone is located in the ransition regions of sea and land. It’s the important habitat of human being with its abundant natural resources and advantages geographical location. With explosive development of social economy and urbanization, land use of the coastal zone in cities like Lianyungang, located in north-eastern Jiangsu province, changes rapidly, the studies of which could be of great significance for coordinating the landscape pattern of the coastal zone and guiding the development of social economy. Based on4period TM remote sensing images(1987,2002,2007and2012), the land use classification is established, combined with surface spectrum characters and spatial attribute, so as to finish setting the land use dynamic database. In light of this mentioned above, by means of the usage of land use dynamic degree model and land use types of transfer matrix model, this paper makes a quantitative analysis on land use change during the past25years in Lianyungang coastal zone by the help of GIS spatial analysis technology. Moreover, under the guidance of the theory of landscape ecology, different indexes from class level and landscape level were chosen to analyze characteristics of landscape change of different periods using landscape pattern indexes, and further reveal the Lianyungang coastal zone land use/cover change characteristics and regularity. According to the analysis, we can reveal the land use/cover change characteristics and laws, with several conclusions as follows:(1)The process of land use, associated with numerous factors, is of great complexity and difficulty. Therefore, it is necessary and valuable to utilize different models commonly applied to understand completely and predict the changes of land use and land cover. In this paper, Land use dynamic model and the types of land use transfer model were applied to the case study of coastal zone of the city Lianyungang during1987-2012and the results show that the situation of land use of Lianyungang has rapidly changed during the last25years. Particularly, some land use types, namely, cultivated land and construction land, have changed the most dramatically, with278.93km construction land increasing and188.31km2cultivated land decreasing during the past25years, which to some extent substantiates that the1987-2012period is the developing period of Lianyungang coastal zone.(2)From the perspective of landscape ecology on land use change analysis, on the one hand, the natural process of land use, without any influence of human activities, can be exhibited. On the other, adding the analysis of contributing factors of human activities, the comprehensive understanding of land use under the disturbing of natural and anthropogenic processes can be achieved, getting the internal mechanism of changes of land use. Furthermore, analysis of landscape pattern and its evolution process of Lianyungang land use over the past25years by choosing the mean patch fractal dimension, landscape shape index, landscape diversity index and evenness index of landscape index, evolution reveals the changes in the study area of the period of the landscape pattern of land use and under the impact of human activities on the landscape. Additionally, the regional land use differs among landscape types and the landscape between the inhomogeneity increase, with instability enhancing, reunion plaque reducing, the distribution swinging and metastases frequency increasing, reflecting that the influence of human activities on land use degree gradually is increasingly strengthen.(3)To explore the driving factors of land use changes, numerous related factors should be taken into consideration, as well as the inner relationship of the involved factors. By means of principal component analysis method, the multiple index data into several comprehensive index analysis of the impact of changes in social and economic factors on regional land use of Lianyungang coastal land use changes, the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis were generally considered and the results shows that the development of social economy land use change is the main driving force, and changes of social consciousness also have an important influence on the development of land use.(4)The utilization of natural resource in Lianyungang is increasing, which is beyond the capacity of the natural ecological system, the conflicts between ecological footprint and ecological capacity are going up, the present developing model is not sustainable, the ecological environment is at risk.
