With the development of China mobile phone communication industry quite rapidly, it has become the world’s largest mobile phone production base during the recent ten years. Because of China large population base, which leads to exceedingly rising of the number of mobile phone users every year, such a huge mobile phone market has attracted a great many of mobile phone manufacturers to join in. Nowadays, the mobile phone industrial chain has becoming a considerable scale industry. And the mobile phone design companies are becoming the core of industrial chain by manipulate the core components of the upstream procurement resources and provide solutions for downstream mobile phone firms, which can obtain a higher profit return in the early period. With an increasing number of mobile phone design companies jumping into this industry, the industry is faced with more and more stronger market competition. The profits of mobile phone design companies which are in high profit zone of the industrial chain are becoming lower and lower. In order to win some market share of mobile phone in such cruel competitive environment, it is necessary for mobile phone design companies to make appropriate R&D strategy on the basis of the characteristics of the industry.This thesis takes creative imitation and duplicative imitation R&D strategy chosen of U company as the research object, small and medium enterprises can only implement the R&D strategy with imitation innovation oriented based on the present situation of our country at the present stage, while the creative imitation and duplicative imitation is the two typical levels of imitation innovation. Based on summarizing to the related theory of R&D strategy and imitation innovation, and the three stages of U company’s development:started, expansion, transformation, and from the development history of feature phone of2G to smart phone of3G and4G. Analyzed the main R&D project of U company in recent years, and study on the R&D strategy of creative imitation and duplication imitation implemented in different periods, and analysis of strategy implementation is appropriate or not and to identify the problem. It is pointed out that the implementation of imitation innovation strategy associated with environment, learning organization, the ability to catch up, and putted forward with duplicative imitation to quickly capture market in the mature technology stage, with creative imitation in translated technology stage, active innovation learning in the flow technology period, forming the higher level of ability, the ultimate realization of independent innovation.
