As a way of human existence and an important link of social reproduction, consumption plays an important role in human survival and development. Consumption is generally divided into productive consumption and living consumption. From the perspective of consumption’s effect on environment, this paper divides consumption into ecological consumption and non-ecological consumption. Beyond all doubt, consumption has become a social issue in nowadays society, and most people believe that material things are the secret of happiness. Due to the existence of such factors as people’s ostentation and hedonism, non-ecological consumption phenomenon has become quite serious, concretely manifested as: premature consumption has distorted real needs; unbalanced consumption has affected generational equity; luxury consumption has destroyed intergenerational equity, and the traditional value system that emphasizes diligence and thriftiness and self-discipline has been damaged day by day. Mankind’s unreasonable consumption idea and model have not only corrupted the social morality, but produced an important impact on the ecological environment to a great extent: the natural resources have been wasted seriously, the ecological environment has been ruined severely, and human has gone opposite to the nature. The existence of this non-ecological consumption is an important factor that hinders the sustainable development of economic society, urgently needing to be confronted and solved by people. The realistic demand urges us to make a theoretical answer to how we should shed light on ecological civilization construction from the perspective of consumption. In order that mankind should break through the ecosystem predicament to achieve sustainable development, lots of scholars at home and abroad have successively turned their attention to various possible resources, in hope of exploring a way to achieve sustainable development from the perspective of consumption, to provide a theoretical guidance for the solving of non-ecological consumption. Marxist ideology of consumption becomes a focus of attention and research. Marx doesn’t directly propose consumption theory and thought in his classic texts, but there are ample discussions on consumption problems. His analysis on the relation between man and nature in capitalistic conditions, explanation to alienation theory, discussion on human’s all-round development theory and exposition on reconciliation between man and nature in the future society all highlight the vital function of consumption link. Marxist ideology of consumption has extremely significant implications for the ecological transformation of Chinese consumption: for ecological consumption, we must adhere to the coordination between consumption and production as well as distribution, the coordination between consumption human needs, the unity between consumption and human’s free and all-around development and the unity between consumption and social equality and justice. We must give play to the important guiding role of Marxist ideology of consumption to the establishment of ecological consumption in current China, and actively urge the transformation of the present non-ecological consumption in China into ecological consumption. We mainly need to start with the following aspects: one is to construct ecological consumption culture. The government should strengthen eco-ethical education, cultivate ecological consumption concept, and give play to the positive role of non-governmental organizations and media in constructing ecological consumption culture; two is to implement the pattern of ecological consumption, to build a production mode and life style that accord with ecological consumption, so as to improve customers’ consumption level and consumption power; three is to create an ecological consumption environment and establish a sound legal system of legal system, to form a long-term mechanism for ecological consumption, regulate the consumption policies constantly, and enhance the policy orientation for ecological consumption.
