In recent years, China’s aging population trend is increasing, particularly in case of rural economic development level is much lower than urban, and the current situation of rural population aging is much more serious than we thought. The urban-rural dualistic economic system has not yet disintegrated. Along with the promotion of urbanization and industrialization, large numbers of rural labor transfer to city for employment, which made a great impact on family endowment and land endowment. The old-pattern rural social old-age insurance system must be abolished; the new one which is of development potential needs to be built. Consequently, the state council awarded the " Guidance from the State Council on pilot new-pattern rural social pension insurance system " in 2009, began to implement the new-pattern rural social old-age insurance system which combines individual pay, collective allowance with government subsidies, mutual assistance programs with personal accounts. The pilot project of new system is gradually expanding in the whole country, and it is designed to realize a complete coverage of rural population of the right age before 2020. As the main participants and direct beneficiaries of the new system, farmers’ participation in insurance is of far-reaching significance in promoting the development of new-pattern rural social old-age insurance system. However, during the implementation of the new system, the phenomenon such as the low rates of farmers’ participation in insurance and the single choice of the low pay occur, this would have a negative impact on the sustainable development of the new system. Therefore, the author takes the factors affecting farmers’ participation in the new-pattern rural social old-age insurance as an object of research, and hoped that it could be able to make constructive suggestions through this research. In this thesis, based on the theoretical analysis, the author uses the Push-pull theory and conducted a series of investigation with questionnaire in Pingxiang city, which is a pioneer city in piloting the new-pattern rural social old-age insurance system. The author uses descriptive statistical analysis and other methods, built a logistic regression model, expected to find the significant factors and then put forward suggestions. The innovation of this thesis is that the author uses the Push-pull theory to consider a problem in forward and backward vision, through which could lead to a comprehensive understanding of a problem; the author also uses the method combining empirical analysis and normative study, through which could lead to an accurate understanding of a problem. This thesis is divided into five parts as follows:The first chapter is the introduction part. This part describes the background, significance, related research review and evaluation of this research. It also introduces related concepts and theories, the paper structure arrangement and the research methods. The second chapter is the introduction and analysis of the current status of farmers’ participation in insurance. Firstly, the author introduced the development of the rural social old-age insurance; secondly, the author describes the current status of farmers’ participation in the new-pattern rural social old-age insurance; and finally by learning from the Push-pull theory, the author analysis the factors affect farmers’ participation in insurance from three aspects. The third chapter is the analysis of significant factors that affect farmers’ participation in insurance. By using logistic regression model analysis, the author sums up the factors which could pave the way for the next chapter. The fourth chapter is the suggestions and measures to improve the enthusiasm of farmers to participate in the new-pattern rural social old-age insurance, which is based on the analysis in the previous chapter. The fifth chapter summarizes the thesis and put forward the shortcomings and outlooks of this research.
