With fast economic development and population growth, human activities are exerting a vital impact on natural environment. The increasing frequency of geological hazards puts a lot of limits upon the land development and exploitation, while industrialization and urbanization are demanding more and more non-farming construction land. Blind expansion of construction land could lead to higher possibility of geological hazards. However, current general land use planning does not include analysis to geo-environmental factors. Therefore, the study of impact of geological hazards on land use will help to enhance the role of land use planning on disaster prevention as well as the reconstruction and treatment of geological hazards. This paper analyzed the interaction between geological hazards and land use, discussed the impact of geological hazards on land use based on the definition and classification of geological hazards. The study site was selected in YILIANG, YUNNAN. This paper compared the influence of geological hazards and post disaster on land use, and proposed safety evaluation and adjustment and optimization on land use of Yiliang. The main objectives of this study include:(1) Mechanism study on the impact of geological hazards on land useInterference and restriction exit between geological hazards and land use. The geological hazards need the fault zone formation, topographic elements existence, heterogeneous litholoical development and hydrological accumulation. The accumulated energy could unexpectedly turn into disaster after a long time, which would destroy ground building and endanger human through the slope deformation. This is how geological hazards limit the land use.(2) Comparison of impact between before geological hazards and post-disasters on land use in YiliangThe damaged locations caused by landslide and collapse of boulders were mainly distributed in the residential area and factories at the bottom of the mountain. The geological hazards points is densely distributed along North-East through the study of land use map.(3) Safety area distribution and adjustment of land use based on geological hazardsFirstly, we conducted the safety evaluation of land use based on geological hazards from the following two aspects:susceptibility of geological hazards and economic losses. We divided the land use of Yiliang into three levels:high, middle, and low through the raster calculation module in GIS. Results showed that high risk area distributed in Fault zone area and the eastern part; middle level risk area distributed in the eastern part of Luohe and Yiliang; and low level risk area distributed in northeastern part of Zhongming.Secondly, we adjusted the land use in Yiliang based on geological hazards and compared with land use planning before disasters. We found that land use planning before disasters was to some extent not reasonable and did not take risk of geological hazards into account.Lastly, we chose Luozehe town to study the adjustment of land use. It helped to get rid of the inappropriate area and improved the land use planning.(4) The advice for land use based geological hazardsBased on this study, we analyzed unreasonable factors that resulted in geological hazards and come up with two suggestions for improving land use planning:Firstly, geo-environmental factors should be taken into account in land use planning; secondly, land use regulation and disaster prevention will help to decrease the disaster losses as low as possible.
