With the intensity of global market competition, enterprises are facing the dilemma of innovation or ruin. Knowledge as a source of enterprise innovation, the academic community pay more and more attention to it. Most of the existed literature show that the quantity of knowledge stock of enterprise determines the level of innovation performance, However, ignoring the important role of knowledge structure in the relationship between knowledge stock and innovation performance, because, even if the two enterprises have the same knowledge stock, they also have different innovation performance due to different knowledge structure.In view of the above problems, this paper attempts to study the knowledge stock impact on innovation performance from the perspective of knowledge structure. Specifically according to the different knowledge structure, and the definition of Henderson, Clark and Frenken on innovation, the innovation is divided into four types:incremental innovation, architecture innovation, modular innovation and radical innovation. Using the basic theory of complexity science as the guidance, using the knowledge structure and innovation performance as the research purpose, forward a complex analysis’framework of knowledge structure, and the coupling relationship between knowledge element as the basis, adopt the methods of the model of complex system-NK model, and the model was simulated by computer. We discusse a series of problems between the selection of innovation’s type and innovation performance, trying to suggest that relationship between knowledge stock and innovation performance from the perspective of knowledge structure. Research results show that:The knowledge stock under the condition of constant:Firstly, knowledge structure is more complex, enterprise’s innovation performance of tortuous downward trend.Secondly, The knowledge structure is more complex, enterprise’s innovation performance spending less time to attain a steady states.Third, regardless of whether the knowledge structure changed or not, the four types of innovation have positive role in promoting the innovation performance. However, when the knowledge structure changed, architecture innovation and radical innovation bring the innovation performance increase is superior to the incremental innovation and modular innovation which knowledge structure is not changed.Fourth, when knowledge structure changed, architecture innovation need to rebuilt the existing knowledge structure, therefore, the innovation performance of enterprise reaches a steady state needs to spend more time; when the knowledge structure is not changed, incremental innovation and modular innovation only need to enforce or change the existing knowledge, therefore, the innovation performance of enterprise reaches a steady state needs to spend less time.Fifth, we obtained a result different to the existing literatures through the robust test. The existing literature shows that improve the knowledge stock is advantageous to increase the innovation performance of enterprise, however, the result of this study found that there is no strict positive correlation between knowledge stock and innovation performance, knowledge structure plays a mediating effect.To sum up, this paper affirms that different innovation mode have promoting effect on innovation performance of enterprise, as the same time, reveals that knowledge structure have mediating effect on the relationship between the knowledge stock and the innovation performance. The results provide certain theory meaning and realistic meaning when the enterprise in knowledge selection, absorption and the choice of innovation strategy.
