With the transformation of the global economy, enterprises not only need exploitive learning to maintain the existing competitive force, but also need explorative learning to find the future development opportunities. The organizational ambidexterous learning’s importance for enterprises’ survival and development had been approved by many scholars.Under the background of open innovation, industry-university collaborations as the important way to acquire external innovation resources provide a good learning opportunity for enterprises. But the existing study about organizational ambidexterous learning has been less involved in the situation of industry-university-research collaborations, the research on the relationship between the organizational ambidexterous learning and cooperation mode is also rare.Based on the research on the mode of cooperation and organizational ambidexterous learning, analysis on the topic of "the relationship between the cooperation modes and organizational ambidexterous learning". First of all, through the literature review, this paper divides six cooperative modes into two types from the interaction frequency, duration, and the intensity of the resources investment. Second, elaborating the relationship between the cooperative modes and exploitive learning and explorative learning, then construct the conceptual model. On the basis of this framework, using case study method to analyze the cooperation modes adopted in four typical industry-university-institute cooperation projects and the nature of organizational learning, to test the model. Through the above research work, this paper draws the following conclusions.First, through the study of the four enterprises, the paper verified the concept model and got the following conclusions:(1) from the overall perspective, the weak relationship between industry and university research cooperation mode is conducive to the explorative learning of the enterprise, the strong relationship is help to enterprises’exploitive learning. (2) the contract research, meetings and conferences, innovative talents joint training is more advantageous to explorative learning;(3) cooperative research, consultancy, building entity and application oriented talents training mode is more advantageous to exploitive learning.Secondly, based on the longitudinal case analysis of past almost 50 years industry-university collaboration process of Ningbo Haitian plastics machinery company, this study found that the cooperative modes which Haitian plastic machinery used transferred from simple technical consultancy to the results transfer, from technology transfer to joint research, from pure R&D project cooperation to build entity. In the transformation process of IUR cooperation modes, the relationship between Haitian and research institutes change from weak to strong, then maintain the two kinds of ties, this ties provide the necessary resources and information for enterprise of technological innovation and organizational learning. According to their own development condition, enterprises should choose the appropriate cooperation mode to carry out technical innovation activities with research institutions, then promote the organizational ambidexterous learning.
