April 2013, Germany proposed "Industry 4.0" strategy, which is the fourth industrial revolution dominated by intelligent manufacturing, to transform manufacturing to intelligent direction. May 2015, China deployed a strategic plan "Made in China 2025", aims to enhance the innovation capacity in manufacturing, and make China the "wisdom made power." In the push of world industrial development trend, to enhance technological innovation and promote the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, Shanghai has put forward higher requirement on intelligent manufacturing equipment industrial, especially the development of robot industry. Industrial robot will have great market potential as a pillar industry of intelligent manufacturing equipment industry. But due to the lack of core technology, Chinese robot industry is still in the lower stage of development, less competitive. The research on Shanghai robot industry will help to improve the competitive position of the robot industry in the future world robot market.The paper first states relevant concepts of robot industry competitiveness and its formation mechanism. Secondly, the paper analyses the robot industry competitiveness for the overall from the current development of the robot industry, value chain and innovation chain of robot industry, and the level of robot core technology. Thirdly, the paper applies gray correlation to analysis of the factors of robot industry competitiveness. Fourthly, the paper builds the robot industry competitiveness evaluation index system and uses entropy method to screen indexes, and then uses factor analysis and linear weighting method to build robot industry competitiveness evaluation model, and applies this model to the empirical research and comparative analysis of the robot industry in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, to identify the key factors that restricts the development of Shanghai robot industry competitiveness. Finally, based on the analysis of robot industry development experience abroad, the paper put forward the ascension path of Shanghai robot industry and corresponding countermeasures.The paper’s final conclusions: the development of Shanghai robot industry is restricted by the weak support of government, the short of independent innovation competence of the local enterprises, and low market share. For this purpose, the paper proposes that in order to improve the competitiveness of Shanghai robot industry, the government, industry and enterprises need to work together. The paper’s new ideas reflect in two aspects: the first attempt to study the issue of the robot industry competitiveness; and the first attempting exploration to build a robot industry competitiveness evaluation model.
