In traditional five-axis linkage NC machining, the ball end mill is usually used to machining surface. But as the surface is more and more complex, the ball milling cutter head exposed more and more disadvantages. So it is replaced by flat-bottomed cutter to improve the shortage of the ball end mill. When using flat-bottomed cutter machining hyperboloid on the five-axis machine. The knife trajectory planning is complex and difficult because of the change of surface curvature. Making greatly affects on its application in machining surface. When machining hyperboloid on five-axis machine. The curvature at each point is different because of the characteristics of the hyperboloid itself. This leads to the length is different of each cutting blade rail and the distance between two adjacent cutter location(interval) is also different. How to find a suitable step length and step distance to get a useful machining path is the most important of this article. Therefore, we will study how to plan the knife track road based on using flat-bottomed cutter to machining hyperboloid on the five-axis machine in this paper. We will get the cutter location point and design the knife track road to improve the machining quality, machining precision and working efficiency of the five-axis machine machining surface when using all end mill. Then designed path knife road through the process simulation, and generate cutter location source file and the NC program through the post-processing function of CATIA software.
