The economic benefit of an open pit depends on the rate of tailings. Besides, blasting technology can control the tailings of oil shale effectively. Thus, how to reduce the tailings of oil shale has become one of the technical problems to be solved in an open pit.In this paper, the east Fushun open pit was considered as the engineering background. The uniaxial compressive and wave impedance test of rock in this mine were conducted to observe rock mechanics properties. By means of site survey, theoretical analysis of rock crushing mechanism, numerical simulation and bursting test, the effect of several factors on the tailings of oil shale was researched. These factors included explosive consumption, countersink diameter, no coupling charge in radial direction and spacing pattern parameter. Also, blasting parameters were optimized in the project of the east Fushun open pit.The results from the simulation test above showed that:oil shale were crushing explosive rock mass. There was positive correlation between the extent of damage on oil shale and some factors that were explosive consumption, countersink diameter, no coupling charge in radial direction. Besides, the extent of damage had a negative correlation with pitch of holes, distance between two rows. The extent of damage for square drilling remained less than that for triangle drilling. Moreover, explosive consumption was 0.16kg/m3, and countersink diameter kept 120mm, combine with the grain diameter of 100mm. Square drilling was designed, on which both pitch of holes and distance between two rows was 4.5m. As a result, the rate of tailings decreased from 14.2% to 6.75%.In this paper research achievement provided theoretical direction for reducing the tailings and environmental protection in the east Fushun open pit. Meanwhile, this paper gave a certain reference basis for improving blasting effect in open pit with soft rock.
