Kapok is a natural cellulose fiber,which has low density and the warm touch,also is natural antibacterial.It is hydrophobic and oleophylic.Nowadays,since kapok has many advantages,it gets more and more attention.As it is not hydrophilic,it requires pretreatment to improve its water infiltration performance,so that it will be easier for the dying and finishing of the kapok fabrics.But so far,there is still no mature kapok pretreatment.This study will provide technical reference for kapok industrial process.In this paper,we study ultrasonic pretreatment process for kapok.Based on the large amounts of study papers about kapok,cellulose fiber pretreatment and ultrasonic techniques,we designed three ultrasonic treatments using pure water,surfactant solution and the alkali and peroxide one-bath for the water bath separately,to treat with the kapok/cotton blended yarns.By testing the morphology,chemical composition,mass loss,whiteness,tensile properties,compression properties and water infiltration performance of the yarn before and after treatment,we finally determine the optimal pretreatment,and analyze the differences among these properties after the processes.Through this study,we obtained the following main conclusions:?.Kapok/cotton blended yarn treated by ultrasonic with pure water After the ultrasonic treatment with water and the other experiment which added a hot water pretreatment,only the surface impurities of the kapok and cotton fibers in yarn were eluted,the chemical composition remained unchanged,the mass loss was approximately 6%,the mostly loss was kapok flocking,the whiteness had increased slightly,the strength loss was large,the yarn became fluffy,the hollow of kapok may be reverted to some degree,the yarn before and after treatment was water repellent.?.Kapok/cotton blended yarn treated by ultrasonic with surfactant solution(1)After the ultrasonic treatments with the bath of one surfactant and mixed surfactant.oven dried,only the surface impurities of the kapok and cotton fibers in yarn were eluted,the chemical composition remained unchanged,the whiteness had increased slightly,the strength loss was large,water infiltration performance is not changed,the yarn before and after treatment was water repellent.(2)After the ultrasonic treatments with the bath of mixed surfactant,oven dried,the mass loss was larger,the compression work was smaller,the overall results were similar with the ultrasonic treatment with pure water.And the mixed surfactant solution can provide the multiple function of washing,permeating and solubilization.?.Kapok/cotton blended yarn treated by ultrasonic with the alkali and peroxide one-bath(1)By the single factor experiments of the ultrasonic treatment with the alkali and peroxide one-bath,the better range of the parameters were decided,NaOH concentration was 4.0-6.Og/L,H2O2 concentration was 4.0-6.0g/L,time of ultrasonic treatment 50-60min,reaction temperature 50-60 ?.(2)By the orthogonal test with four factors and three levels,the optimal treatment was decided.And the conditions included NaOH concentration 5.0 g/L,H2O2 concentration 5.0 g/L,time of ultrasonic treatment 60min,reaction temperature 60 ?.(3)After the optimal treatment,the height of capillary effect was up to 117.3mm,and the surface of kapok fiber in yarn wrinkled,with some protruding stripes.The surface of fibers became rough.The hemicellulose,lignin,wax and other ingredients in yarn has decreased,but the main chemical composition did not change.The mass loss was about 8.5%,and the mostly loss was kapok flocking.The whiteness was able to achieve the market demand,and the hy'drophobic surface became hydrophilic.?.The comparison of the different ultrasonic treatments(1)Among the three ultrasonic treatments,the results of the treatments with water and surfactant solution like the morphology,chemical composition,mass loss,whiteness,tensile properties,compression properties and water infiltration performance were almost the same.The whiteness and water infiltration performance were not improved.But using the ultrasonic treatment with the alkali and peroxide one-bath,the surface of fibers in yarn became rough,and the whiteness and water infiltration performance were improved remarkably,the hydrophobic surface became hydrophilic,and the height of capillary was high.(2)By the ultrasound contrast tests,use ultrasonic or not,the results showed that the using of the alkali and peroxide one-bath caused the similar outcomes in the morphology,chemical composition,mass loss,whiteness,tensile properties,compression properties and water infiltration performance of the yarn.and the using of ultrasound made fiber surface more rough,and the mass loss smaller,the yarn whiter,and the capillary effect higher.(3)The ultrasonic alkali and peroxide one-bath process can not only reduce the amount of reagents,especially the caustic soda,but also lower the react temperature,reduce energy and time consumption,shorten the process.
