In order to investigate the feasibility of biological method elimination of odorous gas from wastewater treatment plant, bio-trickling filter(BTF), biofilter and bioscrubber were used to treat VOCs and odorous gas which was collected from four tanks(Sanitary sewage lifting tank?Oxidation tank?Accident tank and Adjusting tank)of a Sinopec chemical fiber wastewater treatment plant.The BTF and Biofilter packed with ceramic pellets, and the bacteria source of hanging membrane was efficient odor pollutants degradation bacteria which takes from aeration basin B201 of the chemical fiber wastewater treatment plant. The MLSS of that day is 8808 mg/L. At low loading rate(0.1 m~3/h), all three bioreactors showed comparable removal efficiencies(RE) and elimination capacity(EC) on Benzene, trichloroethylene, methyl acetate. But BTF shows a better RE on Methanol, ethanol, cyclohexane and xylene. In which the RE for BTF were calculated to be 98.61%, 75.47%, 45.08% and 91.65%, respectively. when the treatment capacity increased from 0.1 m~3/h to 0.2m~3/h, the corresponding empty bed residence time(EBRT) cut down from 172 s to 86 s,The BTF displayed a better stability compared with Biofilter and Bioscrubber, Its removal efficiencies of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, cyclohexane and m-xylene were increased to 96.80%?100.00%?92.15% and 99.68%Furthermore, the temperature and humility of the three bioreactors varied consistently, The fluctuation range of temperature was maintained in ±2.5 a day, and the humility maintains 90% above. In scanning electron microscope, the main microbial species of Biofilter were filamentous fungi, spherical bacteria(little) and spiral shaped bacteria and the microbial species in BTF were filamentous fungi, spherical bacteria, spiral bacteria and nematodes. The biodiversity of the two biological reactors were high. But the pressure drop in BTF was always not detected.The results of bench-scale test showed that the BTF was the best biological treatment for treating VOCs and odorous gas in this chemical wastewater treatment field. A vertical bio-trickling filter which diameter of 2.0 m, height of 5.7 m and a cross-flow bio-trickling filter which length of 4.9 m, width of 2 m, height of 1.9 m was designed with packing volume of 9m~3 according to the bench-scale BTF. And the design of mixing chamber and nutrient solution tanks were also be illustrated.
