With the rapid development of industry and the unceasing increase of China's population, water resource shortage problem has been increasing, especially in north mining area where the serious water shortage became mining area people's production and life obstacles, so to solve the water shortage has been urgent. An efficient coal mine waste water treatment agent is synthesized in this study, which can be used to deal with a large number of coal mine waste water pouring from mine, and the mine wastewater after treatment can be recycled. This way can not only solve the water shortage problem in mining area, but also can bring economic benefits for the mine enterprise.The starch modified efficient flocculant was synthesized by grafting acrylamide ?AM? onto pea starch in this study, then the flocculant was characterized by the EA, FT-IT, SEM, TGA and NMR methods, the characterization results show that the starch modified efficient flocculant was successful produced. The effect of synthesis conditions on the properties of the new flocculant were also investigated, and the optimal synthesis parameters of the starch modified efficient flocculant are listed below:the mass ratio between pea starch and acrylamide is 0.5, the reaction temperature is 65?, the dosage of cerie ammonium nitrate ?CAN? is 0.02 mol·L-1, the dosage of 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl-TriMethy lammonium chloride ?CHPTAC? and NaOH are 0.11 mol·L-1 and 0.06 mol·L-1, respectively. Finally, the application experiments of the synthesized flocculants for coalmine wastewater treatment were carried out, found the optimal dosage of the starch modified efficient flocculant is 40 mg·L-1, it has a remarkable wastewater treatment effect for the coal mine wastewater with pH range 6-8. Compared with traditional PAM flocculant, the synthesis of new flocculant performs the best flocculation behavior for coal mine wastewater.Therefore, the starch modified efficient flocculant which was synthesized in this study may be applicable for use as a novel flocculant in coal mine wastewater treatment, and its high efficiency in coal mine wastewater treatment will be able to solve the problem of water shortage of mining area in north China. At the same time, this starch modified efficient flocculant is a kind of environmental friendly water treatment agent, that has a very good application prospects in the future under the increasingly strict environmental protection requirements.
