As one of the main components of roller belt conveyor. the turnabout drum is the research object of this paper, and its main functions are list below : to turn the direction for the conveyor belt, to improve conveyor belt's tension by weight and ensure its capacity. Therefore, the failure of the turnabout drum often causes the enterprise to have to suspend the transmission line and take the inspection maintenance work. At the same time, the roller failure will cause safety accidents and may cause great losses to the enterprise.In this paper, based on the turnabout drum of main charging belt on the blast furnace ironmaking plant,failure forms and causes of the drum has been analyzed,and optimization of the structure is proposed.Firstly, the calculation of each parameter in the blast furnace belt conveyor is finished and then got the load exerted on the turnabout drum. Based on drum's work and simplified model,the analysis to the structure and the stress of the drum has been achieved. Then the stress analysis and strength check of each component comprises a shaft, drum, drum skin, plate, wheel hub, expanding sleeve are finished. According to the calculation results and actual site redirection roller failure situation, the cause of failure of the drum has initially been identifiedThrough the finite element analysis of drum to the structure analysis, this paper used the software of ANSYS. In the finite element analysis of structure, the allowable stress method should be verified compared with before, to ensure the accuracy of finite element analysis.After the finite element analysis results, the maximum stress and a joint force in the region should be found. The joint's stress amplitude in a period is also been found. Based the modified nodal analysis of the drum, the fatigue life will be calculated?The Turnabout drum is a large structure, the damage area of is made of steel materials(ZG230-450). By manual inspection and theoretical calculation, the S-N curve of ZG230-450 can be got. According to the relevant theoretical knowledge, the damage structure's corrected S-N curve of the drum's. Based on the above analysis results, the fatigue life is ANSYS general post processor.After the fatigue life of this turnabout drum has been calculated, APDL parametric design language is being used as the core, in the analysis of the drum stress and fatigue life, the optimization in high stress area of this drum and the plate cylinder's unit assumption are put forward. After the establishment of the drum of the optimization model, the optimization of geometrical parameters of components are set as design variables, the calculation results of ANSYS finite element for the state variables(the maximum deformation displacement and radial plate volume) and the objective function(WEB maximum stress)are set up, then the optimal solution is obtained. Then the optimal solution of the finite element analysis results is feed back to ANSYS again and verify the accuracy of the optimization results. This paper provide a reference and guidance for the design of the drum.
