Straight side two point crank press is a large crank press, which is widely used in automotive industry. Its components are numerous, in the traditional way of artificial design, it needs complicated calculations, long design cycle and depends on the designers' experience excessively. For the design of similar models, the repeated utilization rate is not high. Facing the fierce market competition, how to develop new products with the foundation of existing design experience, knowledge and resources, has become a key factor to improve the competitiveness of enterprises. Based on knowledge engineering, modular and parametric design method, this paper researches and develops the CAD system for the straight side two point crank press, which can shorten the design cycle and improve the design quality.This paper analyzes the existing problems in the process of crank press design. On the basis of the research progress of knowledge engineering, modularization and parameterization, the development goal and architecture of the CAD system of the straight side two point crank press are defined.In order to improve the knowledge reuse rate and shorten the cycle of product design, this paper presents a modular and parametric design method based on knowledge engineering, establishes knowledge base for the straight side two point crank press which is composed of instance base, template base and parameter database.The key technologies used in the system development process are presented. On the basis of introducing the principle and method of secondary development of Solid Works and the database technology, combining with the modular design method and the principle of division, the module division of the crank press is carried out. The parametric design method is introduced for the key parts and components, and given the method of the foundation and realization of the instance base, model base and database.The design method of the key parts of the press based on knowledge engineering, modularization and parameterization technology is presented.Combined with knowledge engineering, modular and parametric techn ology, this paper shows the method to establish knowledge base of the ge ar transmission mechanism and the balancer, and the CAD design flow in detail.At last, this paper introduces the operation process and example of t he modular and parametric design system based on knowledge engineering of the straight side two point crank press.
