At present, the manual meter reading is still extensive used in most parts of China, which seriously affects the efficiency of State Grid Corporation for its low efficiency and many uncertainties. Although a small number of regions in China have used automatic meter reading system through the RS485 bus and power line carrier, this system is not suitable for large-scale promotion because of requiring enormous wiring and labor resources costs. This thesis presents a remote wireless meter reading system based on ZigBee and GPRS technology. ZigBee technology is especially suitable for those fields of wireless meter reading, industrial automation for its low power consumption, long-distance, low cost and excellent networking capability.In this thesis, ZigBee stack protocol at physical layer, MAC layer, network layer and application layer are studied and analyzed based on 802.15.4 standard. Also, the exact definition of primitives is described and several networking are introduced. Meanwhile the ZigBee devices are divided into three different types. After researching and analyzing the solutions of meter reading systems based on ZigBee technology, high-performance MCU and low power RF chip design pattern is selected by this thesis to design micro-power communications module.The design of micro-power wireless communication module includes the hardware and software aspects. STM32F103 and CC1100 E are used as the core of system hardware platform. The working principle and circuit design of each module are analyzed in this thesis. Taking the actual needs into account, the Z-Stack is rewritten and the protocol at application layer is designed referring to corporate standards of State Grid Corporation.Finally, in the test phase, Packet Sniffer and serial debugging tools are chosen to catch and analyze the data packet. Performances of the system including communication module, network and meter reading process is tested, basing on the designed hardware resources. The test results show that the system design is basically feasible, software and hardware design of communication module is reasonable.
