With the continuous progress of science and technology and rapid development of the city, the height of the building is constantly increasing. And the structure of building is becoming more and more complicated. What's more,there are more and more high-rise in big cities.This is a new requirement of seismic design of high-rise building, it is not only to prevent the collapse of the structure, but also to consider the economic losses caused by earthquake effect and influence on the structure. The traditional "three levels, two stages" seismic design has been unable to fully meet the design requirements.Based on reading a large number of literature, the background of performance-based seismic design theory, development status, design steps and performance target selection are briefly expounded in this paper. As well as to analyze the differences and relations between it and the traditional methods and performance-based seismic design combined with its design theory and research content. In addition, engineering project is used to demonstrate all the aspects as mentioned above, and the major aspects are showing as fallowed:1. To analyze the type and degree of structure, determine the seismic performance of the target and the performance of each component in the performance of the target level.2. In the analyzing process, the structure is modeling by three softwares, PKPM SATWE?MIDAS and YJK, to analyze the damage of the earthquake in three phases, the mild earthquake, the mid-level earthquake and the rare earthquake.Moreover, elastic time-history analysis of the structure is carried out by using YJK software and the results are compared with the response spectrum method. Using SATWE software to check the bearing capacity of all structural members except floor and secondary beam under fortification earthquake action.Analysing the structural component performance based on their seismic performanceobjectives. And checking the stress of large open floor and cross-column to ensure the floor can reliably transfer horizontal force and stability of cross-columns.3. The dynamic elastic plastic time-history analysis of the structure under rarely earthquake influence is carried out, and the strengthening measures are taken for the weak parts and components.Finally, the influence of different performance targets on the structure economy is discussed through the practical engineering, and the safety performance of the structure is improved by using fluid viscous damper in the weak layer and the adjacent layer.There are designs of engineering projects using the performance-based seismic design in this paper. It states the high-rise structure seismic design technical requirements and key problems and high-rise seismic design method and steps.And it elaborates the problems need to solve in the high-rise structure seismic design and the methods to solve them.
