After field work and a close study on the traditional line-style folk houses in several different regions in Zhejiang Province,it is found that in spite of the similarity in these houses’ forms, there are big differences in the space structures and living modes that can’t be ignored and therefore evoke the author’s queries into the common beliefs in classifications and hierarchy of traditional folk houses. This article is theoretically based on the structuralism’s holistic view and intends to break though the existing hierarchy of architectural types. From a concrete and micro perspective, the author tries to rethink about folk houses’ typological differences and comes up with the idea of a “micro typology” to express these new findings about folk houses.Traditional line-style folk houses are taken as objects of the study on villages’ differential structure.Analysis in this dissertation shows that the development of the traditional line-style folk houses is close to reproducing a certain prototype. What’s more, the discussion involves studies on the prototype’s space structure, the relationship between the reproducing mode and villages’ structures and even the trivial discourse practice that potentially reveals some principles on which the villages’ structures are expressed. As for research method, the author chose three different traditional line-style folk house types to compare and analyze, which are respectively found in Fuyang,Quzhou, and Ningbo,Zhejiang Province;and at the same time, there are other references as below: the traditional courtyard house, modern brick-concrete system and modern housing. The emphasis of analysis is on plans and compositions, reproducing modes, architecture elements and seemingly trivial phenomena in life.
