The southern region of Jiangsu province belongs to the Hot Summer & Cold Winter area. In this area, there is the coldest Winter comparing with the other area with the same latitude. In winter, the residents who live in rural houses in this area feel very uncomfortable. With the development of economy, a better thermal environment is highly desired. The heating energy consumption will rise in the near future predictably. In order to avoid the increment of heating energy, passive techniques should be used to meet the comfort requirements. At the same time, intermittent and local heating strategy which is used as the main heating pattern should be taken into consideration. Aiming at the intermittent local using mode of rural houses in this region, how to use passive techniques to improve the indoor thermal environment with local insulation as the main strategy is studied in this paper.In this paper, investigation, field measurement and software simulation method are used to explore available methods to improve the thermal environment of those rural houses. At the beginning, the background and significance of the study was discussed. In the second chapter, not only the climate characteristics of this area but also the energy consumption, thermal environment and building air tightness of those Rural house are summarized. In the third chapter, comparing the status quo of urban housing and given studies of the rural house in this area, the reasonable optimization goals of the comfort, energy consumption were put forward. Three different comfortable goals were set for occupants with different thermal comfort and different affordability. The indoor average temperature was improved to 12℃,15℃, and 18℃ in the three goals respectively. To meet the comfortable goals without rising the heating energy, the passivehouse techniques and some other adaptive techniques were explored. In the Chapter 4, the EnergyPlus software was used to establish the analysis model. The thermal performance of different building envelope, windows and ventilation methods was quantitative analyzed with the model. And solutions which can realize a comfort thermal environment were put forward. The winter performance of night window insulation was also analyzed. The summer performance of the rooms with and without winter solutions was analyzed. In the Chapter 5, the air conditioning was used for more comfort. And solutions to meet the passive house energy indexes were analyzed. Finally, the research contents and achievements of this paper were summarized. Then the existing problems in the research and further directions were described briefly.
