The environmental issue has become the focus of world attention. The connotation and applications of environmental education are becoming the important content of research and practice gradually. As the successor of future development of the world, children should form a good environmental consciousness and keep physical and mental health. This has profound meaning for the sustainable development of human society. The campus of primary school is one of the places that children contact most frequently for their live and study. But how to realize the environmental education can be conducted in outdoor instead of indoor of traditional class? Based on the summarizes of current modes of outdoor spaces in the campuses of Zhengzhou primary schools, combined with the regional resources, environmental psychology and behavioral science, as well as linked the environmental education curriculums, a design strategy of outdoor public spaces was proposed. The research thesis is consisted of six sections.Section 1: Introduction. Define the significance of the research on the environmental education-oriented space design mode of the campuses in Zhengzhou primary schools by literature reviews, and introduce the main content, basic ideas, methods, innovation and application value.Section 2: Concept definition and theoretical analysis. The current international and domestic research progress of environmental education theory was summarized according to the development of environmental education theory. The international and domestic excellent cases, including Swedish primary school with rich experience of outdoor classroom, course practice of garden-style campus, spatial cognition referred to child psychology, comprehensive schools with energy conservation and environmental protection facilities and high-density campus strategy to solve the land limit were listed. The international and domestic developments of environmental education were analyzed by related theory and practice.Section 3: All kinds of primary school in the Jinshui District, Zhongyuan District, Guancheng District, High-tech District and Zhengdong New District were selected to be surveyed. The problems of outdoor public spaces were found by the analysis of space types and service condition. The solving strategies were suggested by environmental education theory.Section 4: The environmental education-oriented space design mode strategy of the campuses in Zhengzhou primary schools was proposed by the biological community design mode, water system design mode, solid wastes treatment mode, as well as the planning and development mode of environmental education curriculum in campus. The selection method of environmental education module menu was summarized.Section 5: By referring the previous strategy, the design scheme of outdoor public space with regard to environmental education was presented with the case of Henan experimental primary school.Section 6: The thesis conclusions and prospects were concluded.Based on the pattern language principle, the current environmental situation of primary school campuses in Zhengzhou was summarized. The internal relation of environmental education and the design mode of outdoor public space were linked. The update design strategy, which can be satisfied with environmental education behavior, is also put forward. The research results can provide the feasible suggestions for building a suitable outdoor public space to conduct the environmental education in Zhengzhou primary schools.
