Acoustic echosounder is the regular equipment in the field of hydroacoustic mapping. And it is commonly used for measuring the depth of water. Thus it also plays an essential role in maritime transportation, mapping the seabed topography and marine project development. With the rapid development of computer technology, communication technology and microelectronics technology, especially along with the integration of high-speed computers and communication, the embedded systems has been a hot topic in the electronic information industry. There is no doubt that the research on high-speed and portable echosounder which is based on embedded system, is of great significance.Firstly, the development status of sounders at abroad and home is discussed in this paper. The paper also introduces some conventional methods in estimation of echo. Then the working principle of the echo sounder is described too. A general planning which is based on ARM is formulated. And the paper also determines the relevant performance parameters of the system according to underwater acoustics knowledge.Secondly, the paper introduces a time window method, with the constraint of which, an approximate location of the echo could be found. Simultaneously, an echo estimate means called sliding window summing is developed and compared with other algorithm through simulation. Meanwhile the paper displays design project of this echo sounder's hardware. And a platform of processing and controlling is designed, which can be applied in receiving echo signal, processing data, displaying and coordinating transmission system. The circuit diagrams of the main modules are showed up and simulated.Finally, the software plan of this echo sounder system is discussed. Then the development of device drivers?design flow and upper software, which are used in embedded Linux for displaying and controlling, is introduced detailedly. The display and control software can bring about signal transmission, gain control, echo signal acquisition, data processing and depth display through experiments.
