Civil air transportation has become more and more important because of the rapid development of the economy of our country and the intense flow of cargo and people. However, intense flow rate leads to delayed flight, jammed air traffic and shortage of air space. It is critical for researchers to find solutions to perfect grid-structures expand air space capacity and utilize air space usage. Air highway is discovered to be a novel way of solving these issues. It is designed to be within a confined air space which usually exists between two busy cities. Air highway offers a one-way with no cross section insolated high speed air way for the aircrafts.During the airborne operation, one of the most common confliction among the aircrafts is the lane-change. In consequence, this paper studies the lane-changing behavior of aircrafts in the air highway based on the lane change of ground vehicles and the specifications of the aircrafts operating in the air highway. This paper can be mainly divided into three parts.1. The analysis of the impact factors of the lane change of the aircrafts within the air highway. First, summarize and analysis the theory about air highway, the possibility of the plan of air highway, and the characterizations of airborne lane change. Then study the impacts of lane change based on the characterizations of aviation personnel, aircrafts and air way which provides the theory foundation for modeling the behavior of lane change.2. Model the safe distance for aircrafts lane change. First, the paper provides motion analysis for the process of aircraft lane change following by defining collision model and minimum collision distance MCS. Then it develops the strategies in case of collision when the aircrafts change their lanes. At last, collision mode for airborne lane change will be developed.3. Data simulation and model verification. Matlab is used to simulate the developed model. The strategies of uniform and accelerative lane change motions are calculated based on the minimum safety distance in order to prevent aircrafts form running into each other. And discussed when the aircraft is in the unsafe distance conflict area, what kind of acceleration a1 will be used for adjusting the position into the safe distance conflict area.
