Engine is the key component of an automobile with very complicated manufacturing process at very high cost. The advanced production line layout is also considered as the foundation of the project planning. The plant layout planning is defined as the best utilization of certain production unit to achieve the goal within the limited space. While considering a new engine plant, the confined space, plant logistic route defining and the possibility of extension for future must be discussed carefully.During the previous manufacturing planning system, we focus more on the machine process just to build qualified products. The lean production concept we discussed here may help us to evaluate a production system to meet lean, flexible and relatively low cost.The topic of this thesis will be achieved by the following method.a. The limitation is always a problem in the new plant planning, such as the floor space, the expansion direction and the plant exterior arrangement. In this thesis, we will use the SLP planning method to complete a new engine plant based on a confined plant space. Use the SLP method to improve the layout to reach highest usage of production system resources. Fix the final proposal according to the proposal comparison.b. Setup a Witness simulation model to evaluate the planned production line, includes a series of varieties, the definition of key simulation elements and some internal formula setup. To build a simulation model based on a typical equipment and parts transportation method within the engine production line.c. Collecting the basic production line data, includes the machine cycle time, machine breakdown data, tool change time, manual operation time, changeover time and production line shift schedule, etc. First we need to analyze the machine cycle time to understand the standalone availability and to find out the rough production line bottle neck. After the simulation, we can find out the true bottle neck because the breakdown and tool change have been considered as well. At last,we will simulate the whole line based on a varies of weekly working shift considering the changeover issue. And based on the result, we can try to meet the worst case after giving some considerable optimizing suggestion.
