Statisticshave showed that the amount of construction waste generated from frequent construction activities has accounted for 30 to 40 percent of total solid waste in China, the average output of construction waste is higher than 600 million tons every year. Therefore, how to reduce the generation of construction waste, reduce the impact of construction waste on the environment has become a pressing problem. Many studies have pointed out that waste minimization in construction phase is an effectivemethedto reduce waste generation, in recent years, more and more scholars have recognize that construction design is importanttoconstruction waste minimization. The design phase and construction phase interrelated combination in this paper, both are crucial to improve the construction waste minimization standards, combine the design and construction phase can achieve higher levels of construction waste reduction management. However, it has been confirmed by existing literatures that limited attentionhas been paid to combine the design and construction phase waste reduction management integrated research, no research on how does design stage impact on the construction phase, what environmental performance the research can make. On the basis of intensive literature review and interview survey, this research investigates the factors thataffect the implementation of construction waste minimization at the design and construction stage, thereafter, this research formulates the wasteminimization in design and construction stage evaluation model for assessing the environmental performanceof various waste reduction strategies employing system dynamics theory by a vensim software package. The model comprises three sub-systems, namely waste minimization in design and construction stage, waste generation and disposalmanagement, and environmental performance evaluation. Finally, the resulting model was validated using data collected from a construction project in Shenzhen, China. The simulation results demonstrate that the dynamic model could assessing the environmental benefits ofconstruction waste minimization effectively at the design and construction stage, includeresource depletion, energy consumption, waste landfill space, Public space of illegal dumping, global warming emissions. The simulation results show that waste reduction strategies adopted in the design and construction stage of the case can reduce the amount of waste generated 40.63%, and get good environmental performance: reduce greenhouse gas emissions 12623.3kg, saving landfill waste volume 3901.05m3, reduce occupying vacant public space 688.42 m3 by illegal dumping. The paper build dynamic model of assessingenvironmental performance of construction waste minimization can helps design and construction personnel understanding of waste minimization in-depth. Meanwhile, the model simulation results can provide method for government departments to evaluateconstruction waste reduction environmental performanceof construction projects.
