With the rapid development of economy, the role that road traffic plays in economic development is more and more important, which people pay increasing attention to.Simultaneously, the amount of road traffic and whole vehicle population are also significantly increasing, vehicles develop towards large-scale trend, and the quantity of overload and overrun vehicles is also raising, which make the highway bridge bear heavier load and produce diseases.Consequently, the safety of bridge structure would be greatly reduced and the life cycle of the road network system would be significantly shortened. There are many defects in the existing bridge management and maintenance system.Firstly, the means and pattern of management are outdated;Secondly, funds for bridge maintenance is insufficient and the personnel's quality is not enough.Hence, once there are damages in bridges, they cannot get timely repaired and maintained.Accordingly,a common platform which needs to be developed is in great need to fulfil the visualization and monitoring management of bridges' key information visualization and monitoring management, and thus providing the corresponding technical support to the health management of bridges. In this article, the developing prospect of GIS in bridge monitoring and management system is studied by combining spatial database technology and GIS.Furthermore, the monitoring and management system is being developed, and the overall design of the system is finished. Then a concrete bridge is used as an example, using analytic hierarchy process(AHP)to complete its comprehensive evaluation. As a result, this system provides graph display function and spatial data management function to management and maintenance of bridges, which makes it more standardized and scientific. The main works are as follows.1.Reviewing the BIS research development at home and abroad and summarizingthe GIS technology briefly.2.Embedding GIS into bridge management system by combining the space database technology with GIS technology.3.Based on the above technique, monitoring and management system is being developed, and the overall design of the system is finished.4.A concrete bridge is used as an example, using analytic hierarchy process(AHP)to complete its comprehensive evaluation.5.designing each module of system further to complete the input and output to the system, basic attributes query, management and other functions.
