"You will see in Suzhou, houses are built on the rivers. Little open space in it, creeks have small bridges overhead." This poem named See a Friend Off to Suzhou written by Du Xunhe makes a vivid description of Suzhou's ancient landscapes of bridges, rivers, and houses. With the development of modern economy and improvement of people's living standards, Suzhou's ancient residential houses, which are the gifts from history, have aroused the concern of researchers in many related fields. At the same time, the Suzhou municipal government also vigorously promotes the restoration and re-use of ancient residential houses. Many ancient residential houses, after the replacement of functions, have been put into public use as museums and hotels, enabling the public to review the ancient landscapes of bridges, rivers, and houses. However, problems such as the indoor thermal environment and energy-saving in ancient residential houses have become more and more serious in the process of re-using the ancient residential houses, which have greatly affected the using effects of ancient residential houses. This paper, taking the ancient residential houses of Suzhou ancient city areas as the research object, takes the indoor thermal environment, the transformation of ancient residential houses and building energy efficiency as the research content, and tries to find the strategies to improve the indoor thermal environment of ancient residential houses of Suzhou while ensuring both energy-saving and their ancient architectural styles. The situation of the current indoor thermal environment of Suzhou's ancient residential houses is not optimistic, and the energy consumption is also higher than the average value of Suzhou's public buildings. In order to solve these problems, this paper, starting from Suzhou ancient residential houses, studies their traditional ecological energy-saving technology, gets to know the status quo of Suzhou's ancient residential houses through investigations and questionnaires, makes actual measurements of the indoor thermal environment to the selected typical cases from the investigated ancient residential houses, then makes a comparative analysis of the obtained test data and the status quo data simulated in the software, and next proposes the improvement strategies of the indoor thermal environment, involving principles, building layouts, building structures and management ways, and finally improves the rationality and effectiveness of the strategies through simulated tests in the software. This paper argues that the indoor thermal environment of Suzhou"s ancient residential houses involves three major areas, namely, protection of ancient buildings, the indoor thermal environment, and building energy efficiency. These three aspects are a whole, and restrict one another. The ultimate goal of the study is to find the balance between the three, put forward reasonable strategies, and provide references and guidance for the future transformation of Suzhou's ancient residential areas, so that the ancient residential houses can revitalize and melt into the rhythm of modern life, not just as "decorations" of a city.
