During the transportation of steel coils on general cargo ships at sea,the steel coils shifting incidents often happened due to the unreasonable stowage position and improper securing patterns which have resulted in damages to the securing devices and the dunnage when the steel coils suffered large inertial force.Consequently,it poses a threat to the safety of the cargoes and ships. In order to reduce the incidents and ensure the safety of the steel coils, this paper does some research related to the selection of stowage position and securing patterns on general cargo ships.Firstly, this paper gives some advices about the steel coils stowage position on general cargo ships especially for the steel coils which are valuable and heavy, and have special requirements to the quality according to the acceleration limitation suffered by some precise heavy cargoes with some reference from IMO?CSS-Code?and the relative software which has calculated accelerations in different positions in reality.Secondly, analysing external force suffered by steel coils on general cargo ships and supplying the securing strength calculation methods to the steel coils. Then creating steel coils stowage pattern models through analysing the frequently-used stowage patterns of the steel coils on general cargo ships.Lastly, taking use of the models and calculation methods to calculate the real securing strength for the steel coils.According to the calculation results, designing the securing patterns of steel coils in different positions of the general cargo ships. The securing patterns will be presented by CAD obviously. The different securing patterns which designed for different positions in real ship satisfy the requirements to the steel coils safety transportation.Consequently, the calculation methods supplied by this paper have greatly theoretical and practical significance for the ship officers to check the safety of the securing patterns for steel coils.
