Residence is the most basic material life basis for human existence and development.The Athens charter pointed out that “residence is the first activity of the city”,the quality of residential land will directly affect the sustainable development of the city.Therefore,what play an important role in promoting the healthy and orderly development of the city are the depth study of the historical evolution process of residential land and optimizing the layout of urban residential land.Based on the analysis of the historical development of Hohhot city and the historical evolution of its residential land,this paper takes the residential land in the central of Hohhot as the research object,and study the temporal and spatial characteristics,morphological evolution,expansion mode,land suitability evaluation and development scale prediction of residential land expanding by using RS technology and GIS spatial analysis method.In view of the above,the paper puts forward the problems and the optimized layout measures in the development of residential land.The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The development process of Hohhot city: During the Ming and Qing Dynasties,it was made up of GuiHuaCheng formed by ordinary people and SuiYuan city mainly formed by the military presence.In the early days of the founding of the people's Republic of China,Hohhot entered a period of large-scale economic construction,which caused the rapid economic development and the integration of the two cities.During the period of reform and opening up,the economy once again developed rapidly,and all kinds of development zones were built.The intensive effect was remarkable and the scale was further increased.(2)The temporal and spatial characteristics of residential land expansion in Hohhot city: In 1999-2014,the area of residential land in the central of Hohhot continued to increase,and the average annual growth rate of residential land exceeded the average annual growth rate of urban land,and the residential land was in a rapid growth trend.From the perspective of the development of residential land in four districts,the residential land area is in a state of growth,at the rate of growth,Saihan district and Huimin district increased after the process slows down,and Xincheng area and Yuquan area are the opposite process.(3)The characteristics of spatial morphological evolution of residential land in Hohhot city: The intensity of the residential land as a whole presents the trend of spatial distribution,and its high density areas are mainly distributed in the central city of Yuquan district around Yunzhong road and Genghis Khan Street.The circle distribution of residential areas: with the distance from the center of the city,the area of residential land showed a trend of decrease after the first growth.The spatial distribution of residential land in all directions: In 1999-2014,residential land was mainly distributed in the northeast,but with the passage of time,the southern area of residential land increased gradually.Angle of gravity offset of residential land: In 1999-2007,the residential land shifted to the southwest and 155 degrees from the east.In 2007-2014,the center of gravity of the residential land shifted to the northeast,and the angle of the East is 5 degrees.(4)The expansion mode of residential land in Hohhot: In 1999-2007,the residential land showed a "concentric circle + multi-center group" expansion mode.In2007-2014,the residential land expanded in a pattern of "concentric circle + cross axis".(5)The suitability evaluation of residential land: The suitable degree of residential land was distributed in the circle,and gradually decreased from the inside to the outside.The suitable residential land accounts for 25.42% of the residential area in the central urban area.More appropriate residential land accounted for 32.55% of urban residential land.Generally suitable residential land accounted for 27.44% of the city's urban residential land.Inappropriate residential land accounted for 14.59% of the central urban residential land.(6)The city scale prediction: I estimate that the population of Hohhot city center will be 230.53 million in 2020 and 283.91 million in 2030.With the increasing urban construction land area of less than 79.56 km2,and the increasing urban residential land area of not more than 19.30 km2.(7)The optimal layout of residential land: On the space adjustment of residential land,the reserved land of residential area accounted for 29.52% of the total planning residential land,and the adjustment of residential land accounted for 41.72% of the total planning of residential land,and the newly-built residential land area accounted for 28.76% of the total planning residential land.In the scale of land use,by 2030,the central city construction area will reach 325.77 km2 and residential land area will reach 102.78 km2.The residential land takes the form of a cluster layout and the residential land structure will be divided into the main city,the southern new district,the east river new district,the northern new district of the railway station and the new airport district for living.(8)The optimization measures of residential land include: Strengthening the planning and management of the characteristic new district in the eastern of Hohhot and the industrial park in the southern part.Accelerating the transformation of urban villages in southern of Yuquan district and shantytowns focus in the northeast of Xincheng district.Improving the transformation of the road network system of urban villages and shantytowns,while adequate public facilities are allocated in densely populated areas in the northwest of the Huimin district.In order to reduce the stock of residential land,changing the original unused residential land and residential buildings with the construction of commercial facilities and pension facilities.
