With the acceleration of new urbanization process and the development of sustainable socio-economics,the traffic demand of urban motor vehicles increase rapidly, which furthermore cause serious challenges on urban transportation system. In order to ease traffic co ngestion, the simultaneous implementation of various construction projects gradually increases.Correlation and interaction between time and space of projects make the contradiction between urban road multi-work zones and urban traffic more and more prominent.Different from single construction work zone, existence of urban road multi-work zones always have multiple impacts on traffic operation.Hence, supported by National Natural Science Foundation Program “ Traffic impact analysis and timing decision of urban road multi-work zones”(Grant No.: 51408552),this paper conducted a research on the operation and capacity analysis of linear multi-work zones in the urban road, expecting to provide theoretical basis and decision supports for traffic organization and operational management in urban road construction work zones.Firstly, the urban road multi-work zones is defined.Based on the relative location of the space,multi-work zones could be classified into linear, crossed and parallel multi-work zones.Multi-work zones characteristics are clarified, from the perspectives of road structures, macro and micro traffic flow through field investigation. Then existing problems of multi-work zones in urban road are summarized. The speed-flow model of the linear multi-work zones is established, and the impacts of the factors such as heavy vehicle percentage, the length of the work zones, and the distance from the intersection are cleared.Secondly, correlation index is proposed to indicate the relevance of linear multi-work zones with intersection.Whether the work zones has the characteristics of the multi-work zones or some single work zones is distinguished by the correlation index value.A linear multi-work zones in Zhengzhou city is taken for case study. Moreover, the VISSIM simulation model of linear multi-work zones without intersection is built to estimate capacity,a nonlinear regression model is established to identify the key influencing factors of linear multi-work zones without intersection. Results indicate that the influences of desired speed, spacing between work zones, and the length reduce successively. Finally, suggestions regarding the number of lanes change, the length of work zones, spacing among linear multi-work zones, construction signs, limiting speed and separation of motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles et al.are proposed, using the traffic flow theory, lanes balance theory, vehicle dynamics analysis and VISSIM simulation.
