The 21 st century has brought a rapid development to China causing several urban problems to emerge.Studies have shown an increase in issues such as environmental pollution ecological imbalance,ground traffic congestion,large ground building density and land cost increase.Several of the issues mentioned antagonize and cause uncertainty to China's citizens.Urbanization is irrepressible therefore making the consequences of this inevitable.An increase in population flow leads to the perpetual expansion of ground construction.High-rise infrastructures are intended to solve residential problems,however at the same time are causing the urban environment to deteriorate.The demand for residential buildings has been proven to have a direct correlation with a decrease of green space throughout the country,reduction of building distance,as well as causing damage to the urban ecological landscape.Rapid economic development,increasing population and ground traffic congestion along with other issues have caused enormous pressure of urban development.With that being said,advancements in technology and economic strength have allowed individuals to foresee the potential benefits in further developing underground space.Recently,promising headway has been made regarding speed and scale when using underground space.The construction of underground space in Shenyang begun late,few relevant provisions exist to fully guide and control the planning and design behaviors in this city.In this thesis,the author introduces the theoretical analysis,definition and characteristics of underground buildings,while combining the global case studies of foreign countries such as Japan,Canada and domestic cities such as Shanghai,Shenzhen and Taipei.Research conducted by the author in several domestic cities will also be introduced.To compliment the research,discussions were held withexperts in the field regarding the design criterion of underground spaces.This paper describes the current situation,recurring problems of underground space development within Shenyang.Extensive examples of advantages and disadvantages of the existing underground street,and suggested solutions for the city's problems will also be covered.Introduction to the ideas of design phasing and joint transfer,which is imperative for developers' future small-scale underground space development will also take place.The author will also analyze how the optimization of graphic design,vertical design,humanization design,connectivity design could meet the people's psychological needs and aesthetic requirements.By exploring the design strategies for underground planning and design in modern cities,the author summarized the procedure of public underground construction,management of user-friendly services to the underground space and the social and commercial benefits.The paper explores the development and utilization of underground space by evaluating and summarizing the advanced experienced technology both at home and abroad.By doing this the author hopes to comprehensively guide the planning and design of underground buildings in Shenyang.From the aspects of planning,construction,structure and disaster prevention,the author suggested specific technical standards to guide the future development and construction.
