At present, the study of standard two-lane highway is considerably mature at home and abroad. But the characteristics of traffic flow on special two-lane highway are neglectful such as narrow two-lane with no overtaking and so on. In fact, this kind of two-lane highway is widely existed in the road network system in our country. So this paper discusses the narrow two-lane highway with no overtaking in order to promote the research of the traffic flow on two-lane highway better.The paper introduces the study process of two lane highway at home and abroad firstly. And then it summarizes the relevant research experience so that we can clarify the research direction of this paper better.And then the paper defines the two-lane highway in Nanjing Zijin Mountain as the research object, and identifies a set of research methods, which contains artificial survey, floating car survey and photography survey. Surely the artificial survey method is mainly. Then we can analyze the survey data, which contains the traffic volume, speed and headway and represents the basic traffic flow characteristics with SPSS and other software.The paper discusses the phenomenon of car- following and motorcadefollowing, which appears in two-lane highway with no overtaking. And the paper analyzes the process of car following with “the time percentage of follow” to clear the service level of late peak on weekday. On the other hand, the paper analyzes the motorcade- following with motorcade length, motorcade speed, motorcade headway and so on. Based on these, the paper also discusses the discrete model of motorcade.Finally, the paper discusses the crossing process, which appears on the narrow road. And the fifth chapter divides the process of crossing and put forward two concepts which mean "crossing rate" and " rate of crossing frequency". And then the paper establishes VISSIM simulation model based on these. So we can acquire the relationship between crossing rate and traffic flow and confirm capacity of narrow section on two-lane highway.
