Before the First Opium War,KULANGSU has evolved a traditional village in South Fujian.In 1902 this island become the public concession,consequently more and more foreigners come here to live.After World War I,because The world situation is characterized by turbulence and intranquility,Overseas Chinese,Fujian and Taiwan businessmen,Xiamen local residents purchases land to build houses.KULANGSU has developed into a domestic and foreign residential area which is managed by indigenous people,foreign colonists and Overseas Chinese.Historical maps and data is the core of this study,The object of research is the spatial form of KULANGSU during the modern times.The reference of the study is the historical maps from 1843 to 1951.According to the different stage of development about KULANGSU,the maps of 1863,1903,1927 and 1935 were selected to make some detailed interpretation.Digitizing the map in ArcGIS software,meanwhile recording history information into the maps.Analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of KULANGSU by the map superposition.First of all,from the perspective of the map,The drawing method and label of which buildings belonging to foreigners are much more elaborate than architecture belonging to local people.The layout of the building site selection which the Chinese residential area is located in a flat place on the back of a mountain but Foreigners living area is located in higher grounds with better view of landscape.As the distribution of road network,local residential areas are mainly connected by the mountain road,Foreigner buildings are connected by the intensive community road.This imbalance about road construction was broken after the construction period which led by Overseas Chinese and local residents.Secondly,It can be found in the study of the spatial distribution of the Chinese and foreign settlements in modern KULANGSU.(1)The land use of residential area become agglomeration and pluralism.(2)The spatial scope of the Chinese and foreign settlements change from isolated condition to a state of fusion.(3)The temple andchurch which represent different cultural beliefs gradually change to the community space during the development of KULANGSU international settlement.
