With the growing shortage of available land resources in China,compact-oriented development guided by the renewal of stock land in old industrial area is an inevitable choice to achieve sustainable development.Based on the comparison of existing urban spatial compactness evaluation methods,this paper constructs the evaluation system of spatial structure compactness of old industrial area with the specific requirements of the old industrial area renewal considered.The evaluation system selects several indicators from different levels to describe the spatial structure characteristics of the old industrial area and aims at optimizing its structure.By choosing Gulou District,a typical old industrial area of Xuzhou as the research object,the evaluation system is applied to evaluate the spatial structure of the area and the temporal and spatial differentiation characteristics at different time points are analyzed.Based on the results of the evaluation,potential index is introduced to explore a method to determine the range and timing of urban renewal in old industrial area.After conducting the analysis of compactness evaluation and potential index,the optimization strategies of old industrial area are proposed.This paper consists of seven chapters.In the first chapter,the background,research status and methods are introduced.In the second chapter,the concepts of urban spatial structure and compact city theory are explained and the characteristics of compact urban spatial structure are described.In the third chapter,the indexes and calculation methods of compactness evaluation system are put forward based on the analysis of existing evaluation system.In the fourth chapter,the evolution of old industrial area in Xuzhou is analyzed and the evaluation range is selected.The compactness evaluation system is used for empirical research.In the fifth chapter,the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of compactness in the study area are analyzed by using GIS spatial analysis tool and related data processing software.In the sixth chapter,the low-compactness plots are selected by using potential index.The principles of renewal are put forward to promote the compact and intensive land use of the old industrial area.In the seventh chapter,the main conclusions of this paper and the directions of further research are summarized.
