The opening of the Arctic Passage will greatly change the Arctic navigation, and promote the global economic.Under this condition, the research and design of polar ship is of great significance to the implementation of polar strategy in China. The major requirement for polar ships is a good performance in level ice, which means low ice resistance high propulsive efficiency and guaranteed continuity in ice breaking.Hull form, especially bow form, has to be designed so that the ship can achieve required performance in ice under a given propulsive power.Resistance in ice is given as an integral of local ice loads over the hull area.In this paper,Model test of ship were performed to analyze the distribution and the evolution of ice load around the bow form, the developed works are as follows:1)3 kinds of model ships are towed in ice, tactile sensors are used in the tests tomeasure the distribution of ice loads induced by ice.2)Visual processing technology is developed and the dynamic process of iceloads during ship-ice interaction is visualized.3)According to the visual information of distribution and fluctuation of ice loads, ship bow were divided in to several region. And the characteristics of loaddistribution caused by the ice break pattern and hull profile change in differentregions were analyzed.4)The ice-breaking performances of each ship were evaluated.
