Since the 1980 s,China's construction industry has set off a wave of study of regional architecture.Shanghai-style architecture as the regional building in Shanghai, was embodied the regional culture of Shanghai and recognized by academics. However, nearly 30 years of theoretical research and practice, did not bring better prospects for development to Shanghai-style architecture which is facing many difficulties.A variety of architectural forms and wide tune hard definitions, almost abstract the Shanghai-style architecture into non-associated fragments,so the concept of the Shanghai-architecture is also constantly digested and forgotten.Especially after the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, various factors such as social give a higher request to the development of Shanghai-style architecture, and it is clear that the Shanghai-architecture has entered an important transition period. Therefore, the main reason for the plight of the Shanghai-architecture is determined by the the complex network of many contradictions which formed by many levels in its internal structure. This paper analyzes the internal structure of Shanghai-style architecture firstly. Then it summarizes the three “fundamental” issues that lead to the plight of Shanghai-architecture,including“form and culture”,“endogenous and exogenous”and “theory and practice”.Finally,it looks forward to the future development of Shanghai-style architecture through the concept of “school”.This article is divided into six chapters. The first chapter and the second chapter are the introduction of the full text,in which the first chapter states research background, research questions and research methods. Then second chapter puts forward the three internal “ fundamental ” issues are the main reasons for predicament about the origin of the Shanghai-style architecture, and redefines the Shanghai-style architecture from the perspective of faction, divided into generalized Shanghai-style architecture and narrow Shanghai-style architecture. In the third chapter, through the analysis of the changes in Shikumen,it is pointed out that the first reason for the development predicament of Shanghai-style architecture is theirreconcilable contradictions between formal characteristics and cultural connotations. The fourth chapter describes the attitudes of the Shanghai-style architecture community to the revival of the national form in the 1930 s and after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and then explains the endogenous and exogenous relationships in the architectural culture of Shanghai to point out that vulgarization of the Shanghai style architectural culture is the second leading cause of the plight of Shanghai-style architectural development. The fifth chapter analyzes the East China Power Tower and Fangta Park to conclude the third reason for the Shanghai-style architecture development predicament, which is the non-equivalence between theory and practice. Finally, the last chapter summarizes the development dilemma of the Shanghai style architecture and points out the need for the development of contemporary Shanghai-style architecture, and then it indicates the rationality and the development opportunity of the school-style Shanghai-style architecture.
