The small city is the key link in the urban system of our country, and it is also an important battlefield to promote new urbanization. A series of traffic problems exposed by large cities are gradually spreading to small cities, many of which are caused by the irrational structure and planning of urban road networks. As small cities and large cities have a certain gap in terms of urban form and economic strength,so we can't blindly adopt the road network planning method of large cities.Therefore, it is necessary to look for a suitable method for the development of small cities. Based on the study of the total mileage and hierarchical structure of the city road network, this paper puts forward some ideas and methods for the construction of the road network scale in small cities.Firstly, this paper analyzes the concept and characteristics of small cities from two aspects: the development of social economy and the characteristics of urban space. Through the investigation and collection of relevant data, this paper focuses on the characteristics of the residents' travel in small cities, and summarizes the common traffic problems in it.Secondly, starting from the concept of urban road network scale, and based on a comprehensive analysis of the influence factors on the scale, using the system engineering structure modeling technology to build the structure model analysis of influencing factors, to determine the primary and secondary relation of each factor in small cities road network system.Thirdly, obtained from the idea of the balance of supply and demand, according to the characteristics of the development of small cities,this paper analyzes the traffic demand and traffic supply of small cities. Through the improvement of the model, the supply and demand balance model is established for small cities, and the supply and demand balance index is used to calculate the capacity of road network.By using the mathematical programming model to put forward the objective function and the constraint condition to construct the optimization model of the hierarchical structure of the road network in small cities.Finally, taking Xinghua City as an example, this paper analyzes the supply and demand balance of the road network in the central urban area, and uses the hierarchical structure model to optimize the road network hierarchical structure of Xinghua City. According to the optimization results and related information, this paper puts forward some relevant suggestions.
