Purpose:This experiment was aimed to investigate the health functions of dregs of Red Ginseng and radix ophiopogonis in perinatal sows and suckling piglets,which will provide the theoretical basis for the application of dregs of Red Ginseng and radix ophiopogonis in sows feed,when sows were in late pregnancy and lactation period.Method:32 sows,whose body condition,expected date of confinement and parity(average parity 2-5)were similar,were randomly divided into 4 groups,each group with 8 sows.The sows were randomly allocated to one of the following 4 treatments for 55 days(beginning from late pregnancy to lactation 25 day):control group(group ?,fed a basal diet)and three treatments(group ?,?,?,fed the basal diet with 0.5%,1.0%and 1.5%dregs of Red Ginseng and radix ophiopogonis,respectively).Reproductive performance of sows,growth performance of piglets,milk composition of lactating sows,milk immunoglobulin levels,serum biochemical indices and antioxidant function in each groups were compared.Results:1 Reproductive performance of sowsGroup ? and group IV significantly shortened the birth process(P<0.05)compared with group ?.Group ? significantly decreased the occurrence rate of IUGR(P<0.05),and significantly increased live farrowing rate and the litter size of next parity compared with group I(P<0.05).2 growth performance of pigletscompared with group I,the three treatments not notably increase the average birth weight,the average weaning weight and average daily gain,and decrease the death rate(P>0.05).3 Milk composition of lactating sowsIn colostrum and common milk,there were higher milk protein level in group III and group IV than group ?(P<0.05).4 milk immunoglobulin levelsCompared with group I,in colostrum and commom milk,the difference of IgG in group ? and group ? were significant(P<0.05).5 serum biochemical indicesCompared with group I,total protein(TP),albumin(ALB)of suckling pigs were increased by group ? and group IV,and the difference was significant(P<0.05).6 antioxidant functionEffects on serum antioxidant function indexes of lactating sows:Comparing with group I,group III significantly improved the total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC),activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD)and activity of catalase(CAT)(P<0.05),and markedly decreased the content of malonaldehyde(MDA)(P<0.05).Effects on serum antioxidant function indexes of suckling pigs:In MDA,group ? were remarkably lower than group I(P<0.05).Conclusion:1 The dregs of Red Ginseng and radix ophiopogonis added in sows feed when sows were in late pregnancy and lactation can improve the reproductive performance of sows and the growth performance of piglets.2Appropriate amount of dregs of Red Ginseng and radix ophiopogonis can shorten WEI and decrease the litter size of next parity to promote the reproductive performance of sows,related to the optimization of milk composition,the raise of the content of immune factors of milk,the improvement of the serum biochemical indices and antioxidant function of sows and suckling piglets,the improvement of the oxidative damage and immunological competence of sows to facilitate the recovery of the sow body condition.3 The suitable addition amount of dregs of Red Ginseng and radix ophiopogonis added to the diet of sows feed when sows were in late pregnancy and lactation is 1.0%.
