Ramie(Boehmeria nivea)is a kind of high quality forage crop suitable for planting in South China. At present, forage ramie is harvested at 60 ~ 80 cm,but ramie is growing vigorously at this period, and then the yield potential of ramie cannot be fully used. The objective of the study on ramie harvesting mode is to take full advantage of the fiber using ability of ruminants and the yield potential of ramie in its vigorous growing stage.By selecting the suitable cutting height during ramie's growing season,high-yield and high-quality forage and better economic benefits can be obtained, and the application and promotion of “using ramie as forage” can be accelerated. Two ramie varieties, the fodder ramie variety “Zhongsizhu No.1” and the fiber ramie variety “Zhongzhu No.2” were chosen in this study. The best harvesting height of two test materials for different period in a year were decided by changes of growth performance, yield and feeding quality among different testing heights. The results and conclusions are as follows:(1)Before September, the growth rate of “Zhongsizhu No.1” and “Zhongzhu No.2” in vigorous growing stage were both higher than that of seeding stage with a trend of increase first, then decrease. After September, the growth rate of two ramie varieties in vigorous growing stage were both lower than that of seeding stage, and declined sharply in early October and mid-October respectively.(2)The yield of dry matter and crude protein of two ramie varieties were both increased with the increase of cutting height, the best results were obtained at 120 ~ 140 cm treatment and from 100 to 120 cm respectively. With the increase of cutting height, the contribution rate of stem and leaf to total protein yield of both ramie varieties were changed little.(3)The highest daily yield of dry matter and crude protein can be obtained by different treatments in different growth period.(4)With the increase of the cutting height, the leaf stem ratio and forage quality of two ramie varieties were declining at the first harvest, and the feeding quality of the stem decreased significantly but the feeding quality of leaves changed irregularly. Two main reasons for the decline of whole plant feeding quality of “Zhongsizhu No.1” were the decline of stem feeding quality and leaf stem ratio with the increase of the cutting height. Two main reasons for the decline of crude protein content of whole plant of "Zhongzhu No.2" were the decline of stem crude protein content and leaf stem ratio with the increase of the cutting height. The nutritional quality of two ramie varieties decreased with the increase of the cutting height in different reaping batches.(5)The optimum cutting heights of the fodder ramie variety “Zhongsizhu No.1” in different growth period were as follows: 125~135 cm from Mar.6 to Apr.20,75~85 cm from Apr.21 to Jul.11,85~95 cm from Jul.12 to Aug.27 and 105~115 cm from Aug.28 to Oct.3.(6)The optimum cutting heights of the fiber ramie variety “Zhongzhu No.2” in different growth period were as follows: 120~130 cm from March 6 to April 22,100~110 cm from April 23 to July 22,95~110 cm from July 23 to September 2.From September 3 to October 27,it can be harvested at 60~65 cm,if the last cutting time is advanced by more than and 10 days,it can be harvested at 90~100 cm.(7)The nutritional quality of two ramie varieties in different harvest batches were significantly different within a year.Among the six harvests in a year, the nutritional quality of the two varieties showed the first two times better than the latter four times.
