Background:Patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) often exhibit malnutrition. Some studies have showed that malnutrition status is associated with disease severity, efficiency of treatment, and prognosis. However, there do not have the recognized methods to evaluate nutrition status of the patient. Objective:To evaluate the nutrition status with the subjective assessments of nutritional status(MNA and PG-SGA) and the objective(hematological, biochemical)assessments, and to identify and monitor the severity of disease, efficacy of treatment and prognosis of IBD.Method:Between December 2014 and December 2015, 117 outpatient and hospitalized patients(41 UC and 76 CD) and 78 volunteers(Healthy group) in our hospital were recruited in the studies, and nutrition status was evaluated with the MNA, the scored PG-SGA and the objective malnutrition state. According to the MNA and the scored PG-SGA classifications, all subjects were respectively categorized, into three groups(well-nourished [W], at risk of malnutrition [R], and malnourished [M]), and into four groups(normally nourished [A], suspected or mildly malnourished [B], moderately malnourished [C], and severely malnourished [D]).Result:1. Incidence of malnutrition in IBD patient is higher than Healthy group.2. Levels in sera of albumin, total protein, total cholesterol, hemoglobin have showed correlation with the severity of disease in UC, while levels of albumin, total protein, total cholesterol, hemoglobin, BMI, calf circumfefence and muscle circumference are associated with the severity of disease in CD.3. MNA and PG- SGA score levels exhibit positive correlation with the disease severity of IBD.Conclusion:IBD patients exhibit malnutrition and degree of malnutrition reflect disease activity. The MNA and the scored PG-SGA are useful methods to monitor disease severity, efficacy of treatment, and prognosis of IBD.
